At the end of the training program, the trainees are expected to acquire:

(1) A conceptual foundation and knowledge or expertise in one or more aspects of molecular, cellular and genomic analytical techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the scientific method, informatics, and self-directed learning tools that will enable graduates from this program to function both as independent investigators and as members of multidisciplinary teams that include basic scientists and oncologists, and to act as mentors for the next generation of clinical laboratory specialists;

(2) Familiarity with ethical issues related to translational research projects involving human subjects or their tissues, and tissue banking;

(3) Effective skills in grantsmanship and verbal or written communication of research results;

(4) Interest and commitment to become mentors for the next generation of clinician scientists.
